"L'hérédité espagnole, l'évidente filiation de sa peinture (Goya, Picasso... entre autres), les relations d'apparence qu'elle entretient avec l'expresionnisme - celui de Cobra comme de De Kooning - semblent éclairer l'oeuvre de Saura alors qu'elles masquent en fait son originalité profonde. Sur quelques thèmes, qui ont plutôt valeur de stéréotypes: la figure humaine - qu'il s'agisse de Philippe II d'Espagne ou, autrefois, de Brigitte Bardot -, la foule, la crucifixion, il a bâti une oeuvre qui n'a que l'apparence de la fixité. Peintre d'images, il répète les siennes pour mieux montrer ce qui, de tableau en tableau, change, ce par quoi se manifeste la peinture."
"His Spanish heritage, the obvious relationship of his style of painting with Goya and Picasso, among others, its apparent link with expressionism – the works of both Cobra and De Kooning – seem to explain Saura’s work, although in fact they mask its deep originality. On certain subjects, more often viewed as stereotypes: the human figure – whether representing Philip II of Spain or, in an earlier phase, Brigitte Bardot, the crowd, the crucifixion, he built a body of work which only appears to be fixed.
