E.V. DAY (B. 1967)

With her Mummified Barbies, E.V. Day seeks to both acknowledge and conceal the idealized features of Barbie dolls. The artist states, "By mummifying her, I’m concealing her, creating a curiosity. Is she really in there? It raises questions about why she’s so powerful and problematic." The only feature on the Barbies that viewers can discern are their haunting, electric blue eyes. By mummifying these dolls, Day is connecting the modern idealized female form with an ancient one.
