CHURCHILL THANKS MENPES FOR AN ELEGANT WEDDING GIFT, a copy of Menpes’s book of sketches from the Boer War. “It was a kind thought of yours to send me a present for my wedding,” Churchill writes, “& such an interesting one. My wife liked vy much indeed this souvenir of war-time days; & I was reminded of my sitting to you & of yr daughter’s graceful & keen sighted note upon the ‘model.’ Once more let me thank you.” The accompanying volume, beautifully printed in cream colored morocco, contains some 99 color plates of Boer War scenes. Menpes, a native of Port Adelaide, Australia, and a pupil of Whistler, went to South Africa on assignment for the British weekly, Black and White.
