Aldine 8° (156 x 102 mm). Both blanks preserved. Woodcut Aldine device on title (with early coloring) and last leaf. (Some light browning and staining.) 16th-century blind-stamped pigskin over wooden boards, two brass claps (one catch missing), two later morocco spine labels (some light rubbing and staining). Provenance: Thomas Wise (ownership inscription on title and last leave dated 1569); Augustus Frederick (1773-1843), Duke of Sussex and ninth child of King George III of England (bookplate); Henry William Poor (1844-1915), American bibliophile (bookplate, his sale Anderson Galleries New York, 7 December 1908, lot 22); Arthur W. Machen (1827-1915).
Second edition and first independent Aldine edition the editio princeps printed by Aldus in 1503 with three other historical works (see Ahmanson-Murphy 61). The Latin translation by Angelico Poliziano was first printed in 1493. Herodian is an important contemporary source following the period of Marcus Aurelius death. Adams H-377; Ahmanson-Murphy 198; Renouard Alde 98,2.
