This picture relates to the signed portrait by Hanneman of Charles Stanley, 8th Earl of Derby, that was sold at Sotheby's, London, 4 July 2002, lot 67.
Stanley was the only son of James Stanley, 7th Earl of Derby (1607-1651) and Charlotte de La Trémouille (1599-1664). Stanley served as mayor of Liverpool, between 1666 and 1667. In 1650 he married Dorothea Helena Kirkhoven (d.1674), daughter of Jehan, Lord of Heenvliet and his wife, Katherine Stanhope (later Countess of Chesterfield). Dorothea reportedly had an extramarital tryst with King Charles II, which resulted in a child, George (1658-1730). George was raised by the wife of a Gunner at Windsor named Swan, the surname he assumed. He was eventually recognised by King Charles II as his son.
