专家说明

Auguste Hadamard was a pupil of Paul Delaroche. He exhibited at the Paris Salon between 1846 and 1880.

The artist depicts Amphitrite with Poseidon's dolphin. Amphitrite was a Nereid, who became the wife of Poseidon. According to Hyginus's Poetical Astronomy, Poseidon saw Amphitrite dancing at Naxos. She escaped his advances to Atlas, at the farthest ends of the sea. It was there that Poseidon's dolphin found her, an persuaded her to accept Poseidon's marriage proposal. Delphinus himself took charge of the wedding. Neptune rewarded him by placing the form of a dolphin among the constellations.
