John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722) was a celebrated soldier and statesman whose career spanned the reigns of five monarchs. His career reached its zenith under Queen Anne and he led the allied armies to victory in the War of the Spanish Succession, with victories at Blenheim, Ramillies and finally in 1709 at Malplaquet
