The North of Ireland Imperial Yeomanry began recruiting in 1903 but approval for its raising was given by Edward VII in 1901 and 4 squadrons were raised with HQ at Belfast.In 1908 under the Haldane reforms to the Territorial Army they became a Special Reserve regiment and changed their name to The North Irish Horse
