Isaac Israels (Amsterdam 1865-1934 The Hague)

Right after Israels stay in Paris, he moved to London in 1913. He hired a studio on Fitzroy Street 6, and stayed at Morley's Hotel at Trafalgar Square. In this period he painted bustling London citylife: elegant figures strolling in Hyde Park, crowded streets like Regent street (sometimes painted from the top deck of London's red double-decker busses), and views of the river Thames near Richmond, of which the present lot is a fine example. With a few loose brushstrokes, Israels painted a vibrant impression of a sunny afternoon along the river Thames. In the foreground to the left a lady takes a rest on a bench, another elegant lady in a pink dress strolls along the quay and the boathouses. Everything in the composition is bathing in a pleasant sunlight.
