‘While my practice does not only consist of painting, I am instinctively drawn to it. It offers me my most ambitious moments, my most frustrated, some of my most escapist, and some very mundane ones… With painting, I have to deal with a comparatively meagre amount of materiality or physical weight, the equipment is fairly low-tech, and most of the material’s origin I can grasp (like bits of wood, linen fiber, ground materials suspended in linseed oil or egg yolk, for example). I like the fact that there are centuries of tradition and connoisseurship linked to it. I am aware that this era may be interested in more ‘efficient’ art forms, but efficiency has never been my strength or interest’ (D. Sinsel, quoted in A. Scoccimarro, ‘Daniel Sinsel at Chisenhale Gallery, London’, in Mousse Magazine, 1 February 2011).
