Urwerk was created following a meeting between brothers and watchmakers Felix and Thomas Baumgartner, and their friend Martin Frei, an artist and designer. Urwerk SA was officially launched in 1997, with the intention of following their own path and pushing the boundaries of haute horologie. The name was inspired by the Sumerian city of Ur , and the German word Werk. The Sumerian people marked the passage of time with moving shadows casts by obelisks, specifically the course of a year partitioned into twelve units. The German word "Werk" means to work, create, and evolve.
