In the late 1860's, Guido Panerai founded a workshop, using highly skilled craftsmen to produce mechanical instruments such as calculators, timers, devices for depth measurement, and compasses. He collaborated with the Italian Ministry of Defense and the Navy to produce such pieces for them.
The present watch is one of a limited series Radiomir 1938 watch made as a reproduction of Officine Panerai's first production watch, made in 1938 for the Italian Navy. The original watches used Radiomir, a luminous material that consisted of zinc sulphide, mesothorium, and radium bromide, which gave the dial its maximum visibility in the dark.
