FIRST EDITION. Though written in India, West's work is considered 'remarkably up-to-date in its deployment of recent accounts of distress in the British manufacturing districts'. He used this evidence to produce a demand theory, based on the consumption of the manufacturing classes, which was the alternative to Smithian, Malthusian, and Ricardian price and wage theory (see ODNB).
