A PAIR OF GEORGE III MAHOGANY HALL CHAIRS
LATE 18TH CENTURY
Each with arched waisted back carved with a standing lion above a vacant oval cartouche and a bowed board seat on tapering square-section legs

Probably Harry Rixson, Dunstable, Bedfordshire, where acquired on 16 July 1937 (£2).

专家说明

The lion statant is used in the crests of several noble families such as the Percys, Dukes of Northumberland and the Fitzroys, Dukes of Grafton, however its unadorned appearance here (without coronet or standing on a chapeau, for example) suggests that in this instance its purpose was purely decorative.
