FIRST EDITION and one of Tempesta's early works. The Florentine artist produced over 1800 engravings of sporting scenes, battles, processions, historical subjects, natural history and especially of one of his favourite subjects: horses. He was praised for 'the science of the line and the vivacity of touch' (Bartsch). Schwerdt lists nine of Tempesta's books or group of prints, the earliest dated 1598; this volume is not among them. RARE: only one complete copy sold at auction in the past 60 years (ABPC/AE online). Bartsch, Le Peintre Graveur XVII, pp. 161-2; Benezit 8, pp. 247-8; Schwerdt II, pp. 251-55.
