Similar example illustrated:
R. Aloi, Esempi: Tavoli, Tavolini, Carrelli, Milan, 1957, pl. 63;
L. Falconi, Gio Ponti: Interni, Oggetti, Disegni 1920-1976, Milan, 2005, p. 134 (example dated 1946).
Only one other version of this table is known, published in Laura Falconi's 2005 monograph, decorated with trompe l'oeil playing cards, dated 1946. It is probable that both Altara's painted panels were allegorical or symbolic representations of the individual who originally received the table. In the present lot, the panel is decorated with Tarot cards and an envelope - adressed to Gio Ponti's home address - marked with French postage stamps and franked Saigon, Indochine.
