John Trivett Nettleship was a renowned painter of animals. The artist was invited to India in 1880 by the Gaekwad of Baroda, for whom he painted several works of indigenous animals. Nettleship was part of an informal artistic group known as 'The Brotherhood,' which was formed by his friend George Wilson. The group were influenced by the work of William Blake and fellow members included Edwin Ellis and Sidney Hall.
