专家说明

The sitter of this portrait is Jessie Margery Dunthorne (1881-1959), eldest daughter of Robert Dunthorne (1850-1925) and Jessie Walker (1854-1947).

Robert was a well known print publisher and art dealer at The Rembrandt's Head in Vigo Street, London. He was a friend of many of the important artists of the day. The official publisher to the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, he held regular exhibitions in his gallery. Paul Cesar Helleu exhibited 59 works there in 1895 with a catalogue prefaced by Edmond de Goncourt.

Robert's wife Jessie was a sister of Emery Walker, a printer, friend and mentor to William Morris, and a founder of many of the key bodies that propagated the ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement, including including the Art Workers Guild, the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings and the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society. He lived at 7 Hammersmith Terrace, an address which contains the last authentic Arts and Crafts interior in Britain.
