After Gustave De Smet fled to Holland for three years in 1914 during the First World War, the Dutch fisherman's towns kept attracting him. Especially Spakenburg where he returned after the war was of special interest to him. He depicted the town and the people several times, like the present lot.
In this work De Smet points out the roughness and poverty of the fisherman's life while giving the figure a timeless character. The dark palette and the rough brushstrokes are examplary for this period. De Smet wrote the folowing about the paintings of this period:
'De tijd is voorbij dat de schilder alleenrijk een riant, licht kleurvlak moest geven, er is nu een heel andere vereischte gesteld, ook op kleurgebied. (...) Vroeger ging het er om de kleuren met het oog van de natuur af te kijken. Nu is het gevolg van fantasie, dat we die kleurcombinatie krijgen, en geloof mij, dat staat enorm veel hooger.'
