John Armstrong, A.R.A. (1893-1973)

The lack of signature or initials in Classic Horseman suggest this might have been a design for or vignette from a larger mural or decorative scheme. The Chaldean horse is almost identical to the horse in the design Armstrong employed on his dinner service 'Chevaux' (Clarice Cliff) for the famous 1934 Art in Industry, October 1934 exhibition at Harrods entitled Modern Art for the Table.
