Churchill writes to express his pleasure in reading Graves's historical novels Sergeant Lamb of the Ninth and Proceed Sergeant Lamb: 'I have read very few books during this war, in fact I think only six or seven altogether. I find sometimes a book dwells with me several for months, and I read a chapter or two at a time'; nevertheless he has much enjoyed Graves's works -- 'I am a great lover of narrative, in which art you excel'.
The Churchills were at the prime ministerial retreat of Chequers for the weekend of 1-3 May, with a small party including the American ambassador Gilbert Winant. The same weekend, Churchill was to receive news of the Japanese capture of Mandalay.
