A CONTINENTAL GOLD-MOUNTED HARDSTONE HAND-SEAL
MID-19TH CENTURY
Double-ended cylindrical lapis lazuli seal of spiral twist form, embellished with gold ropework wire and burnished gold mounts, gadrooned oval and rectangular with curved corners spreading gold bases, the oval agate matrix engraved with two coats-of-arms accolé, the rectangular with curved corners agate matrix engraved with initials 'M P C A'
3 9/16 in. (90 mm.) high
The initials and arms are those of Choiseul-Praslin, probably for Alix Eugénie Davida Laure de Choiseul-Praslin (1843-1878), accolé with Mercy-Argenteau, probably for Charles Henri François Marie, Comte de Mercy-Argenteau (1840-1892). Alix de Choiseul-Praslin and Charles Henri de Mercy-Argenteau were married in 1863. Charles Henri de Mercy-Argenteau was the son of Charles, Comte de Mercy-Argenteau (1808-1886) and Adélaïde Henriette Angelique van Brienen, Baronne de Brienen (1815-1871). Alix de Choiseul-Praslin was the daughter of Edgard Laure Charles Gilbert, Comte de Choiseul-Praslin (1806-1887) and Georgina Elisabeth Angélina de Schickler (1820-1849).
