The case modelled with two courtisans in a fenced arbour with furniture and a birdcage on top of a cabinet centred by a small white enamel dial with Chinese numerals and steel hands, the eight-day twin barrel movement with Brocot-type suspension and strike on bell, the backplate stamped LEROLLE PARIS 211; pendulum

Regarded as one of the foremost bronziers of the period, the firm of Lerolle Frères was celebrated for their 'purity and originality of design' and their luxury decorations by 'first-class artists, while modelling, moulding, chiselling and finish rank among the bronze-masters of Paris' (Illustrated Catalogue of the Paris International Exhibition of 1878, p. 153).
