CHRISTIE, James (1773-1831). Disquisitions Upon the Painted Greek Vases, and their probable connection with the Shows of the Eleusinian and other Mysteries. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees and others, 1825.

4° (277 x 210mm). Additional title with engraved vignette, engraved head-pieces, and 16 engraved plates, 2 of which folding. (Occasional spotting.) Contemporary polished calf panelled in blind and with gilt ornaments, marbled edges.

IN A FINE BINDING. This second edition revises and expands greatly the edition of 100 copies published anonymously in 1806. Christie proposes evidence linking vase shapes and iconography to Greek mystery cults, and also with the Hindu festival of Diwali and lantern celebrations in China. Blackmer 349; Borroni 11803; RIBA 633.
