拍品 107 We are delighted to offer a selection of sketches by Man Ray from the Estate of the late Elsa and Michael Combe-Martin, including A portrait of Juliet Man Ray from 1940, the year the artist met his future wife, and life-long love and muse. Man Ray was introduced to Juliet through a mutual friend, Elsa Combe-Martin, at a time of great personal and professional soul-searching. Far from the Paris that he loved so much, Man Ray headed west from New York in need of escape, and found himself in Hollywood at the end of the summer of 1940. Man Ray was said to be intrigued by Juliet's exotic features, expressive mannerisms and her dancer's figure. These drawings document this period - the beginning of a great love affair and inspiration to the American pioneer of Surrealism.
