Jan Voerman Sen. (Dutch, 1857-1941)
拍品 156 PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF HENK VAN ULSEN

Henk van Ulsen and Jan Voerman

From the 1970's I have been intrigued by the life and work of the artist Jan Voerman. This fascination is not founded on our shared place of birth Kampen (respectively 1856 and 1927) as much as the IJssel river-landscape around Kampen and later the town of Hattem, Voerman's greatest source of inspiration.
Lofty skies, intense heavens, ominous clouds, endless meadows, with dapple red IJssel-cattle and robust horses.
Jan Voerman farmed the city-farm in the Groenestraat in Kampen. His entire life bears witness to his endemic love for the eternally sublime river the IJssel. He was truly unpretentious and not church-going in the traditional way but religious in the broadest sense. He was known as "The Wise Man of Hattem". Nature was sacred to him.

Since my personal discovery of Voerman's work I have been mesmerized by every pencil sketch and brushstroke.
I never met him, his work is sufficient.

Relinquishing Voerman is not painless, it does create space.

We wish to thank Henk van Ulsen for preparing this catalogue entry.
