Augustus Lamplough's early works depict cathedral interiors and Venetian scenes, but after a visit to Algeria, Morocco and Egypt he turned exclusively to Orientalist subjects. After 1905 he primarily focused on painting views of the desert, the Nile and Cairo street scenes. His skillfully applied washes of watercolour create evocative views of sandstorms and water tinged with the changing colours of the sky. As evident in the present works, Lamplough used a very distinctive backhand signature. He enjoyed success during his career and was particulalry favoured by royal patrons, such as King Edward II, Queen Alexandra, the Queen of Spain and the Queen of Greece.
