Frederic Remington (1861-1909)

The present work, in addition to three others, Captain Dillenback, The First Sargeant, Battery K, First Artillery, in Field Trim and Stable Frock, were produced by Remington to accompany his article, "With the Guns" in the August 17, 1895 issue of Harper's Weekly. According to Peter H. Hassrick and Melissa J. Webster, "Remington wrote and illustrated the article...about Light Battery K of the First United States artillery. Stationed at Fort Hamilton, New York Bay, they left July 6, 1895, to march up to Tyringham in the Berkshire Hills, Massachusetts, site of the company's camp. They arrived July 15 and spent the next two months practicing drills. In his article "With the Guns" Remington recounted his personal observations of the march and subsequent life in camp."
