On 10 March 1877 Lear was in Rome with his young friend Hubert Congreve. They hired a carriage and went out onto the Via Appia. He didn't make any drawings that day - it was simply a nostalgic trip. This drawing, probably done earlier of a site that Lear drew and painted many times, may have been given to Hubert to remind him of the day.
