These paintings are characteristic examples of Orizonte's classicising landscapes, inspired by the beauty of Rome and its surrounding campagna. Considered a great artist by his contemporaries, Orizzonte produced some of the finest classical landscape paintings in Rome during the first half of the 18th century. These two paintings were probably executed circa 1730, when Orizzonte began to apply his delicate and sensitive style to a calm and more synthetic vision of the Tiber Valley with the Monte Soratte, where he often went to draw and sketch during his last three decades of activity.
The paintings are traditionally thought to have been part of the prestigious Chigi collection in Rome.
