Drawn in preparation for the head of the young fortune-teller in Boucher's painted tapestry design La diseuse de bonne aventure, made in 1767 and now at Versailles (A. Ananoff and D. Wildenstein, François Boucher, Lausanne and Paris, 1976, II, no. 640, fig. 1681). The tapestry, together with its pendant La Pêche, were woven by the Manufacture Royale des Gobelins in the same year. The attribution to Boucher was confirmed to the previous owner by Alastair Laing.
