Modern half morocco, gilt and morocco decoration from earlier binding onlayed on front cover, spine gilt, edges gilt by Pfister, spine from earlier binding adhered to rear pastedown (very minor rubbing). Provenance: George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum (bookplate, library stamp on verso of chromolithographed title-page).
FIRST EDITION, outlining Jones' principles of good design and coloring. These principles were illustrated and expanded in twenty chapters, each of which presented examples of fine ornament from a particular geographical area or historical period, and 37 propositions, which were followed by leading designers of the time. The Grammar proved to be Jones's most enduring and influential work.
