Decorated with foliate husks overall, the oval medallion back and serpentine padded seat covered in pink, yellow and pale green foliate silk damask, on cabriole legs, the inside of the front seat-rail with black plastic label 'FF519', redecorated

Bought from Malletts, 15 March 1967 by the father of the present owner.

This French-fashioned armchair relates to the 'cabriole' chair form in Thomas Malton's, Complete Treatise on Perspective, 1775, pl. 33, fig.131. A pair of painted armchairs of identical design, though lacking some of this chair's painted decoration, was sold anonymously, Sotheby's, 25 September 1998, lot 95.
