Alfred Wallis (1855-1942)

In the present work Wallis has deliberately used the existing fold in the cardboard to provide the horizon for his picture. Composed almost entirely in black and white with a thin wash over the whole area of paint Wallis lets the card define the composition rather than having to emphasise it with paint.
