Note du spécialiste

“I feel a need that every work of art should in the highest degree lift one out of context, provoking a surprise and a shock. A painting does not work for me if it is not completely unexpected. Hence my new concern, which at latest gives me the satisfaction of being taken to territory where no one else has been” - J. Dubuffet quoted in P. Seltz, "Statement on painting, 1961," The Work of Jean Dubuffet, exh. cat., New York, The Museum of Modern Art, 1982, p. 165.
