the complete artist's book, comprising 109 lithographs in sanguine and nine woodcuts in black, on Van Gelder paper watermark PARALLELEMENT, 1900, numbered 46 on the justification page (from the edition of 170 on this paper, the total edition was 200), printed by Auguste Clot, published by Ambroise Vollard, Paris, bound (not as issued), with title, justification and text pages in French by Paul Verlaine, each the full sheet, in generally good condition
Overall: 11 ¾ x 9 ¾ x 7/8 in. (299 x 248 x 25 mm.)

Specialist note

There are two states of the cover of Parallèlement. The publisher, Ambroise Vollard had sent the text to be printed at the Imprimerie Nationale, whose authorities had only the title of the book and had assumed they were printing a geometry textbook. After the French government uncovered that the book contained depictions of lesbian imagery, the book was immediately recalled and Vollard was forced replace the original vignette of the Imprimerie nationale bearing the image of the French Republic with another vignette by Bonnard. This lot includes the replacement vignette by Bonnard on the cover.
