The stamps on the verso of this photograph have been identified as M25 and M30 in Steven Manford’s book, Behind the photo: the stamps of Man Ray (2009). According to Manford, M25 is a lifetime stamp used from 1940 to 1951, “the stamp is also found on the backs of photographs Juliet sold to dealers” (pp. 27 & 33) and M30 is a posthumous copyright stamp “numerous photographs sold by Juliet and from the Trust carry an ADAGP stamp” (p. 37).
En 1950, Man Ray réalise quelques décors pour le film Pandora and the Flying Dutchman de son ami Albert Lewin. Il créer notamment des pièces d'échecs de style cubiste et plusieurs tableaux. C’est à cette occasion qu’il fit le portrait d’Ava Gardner en “Pandora”.
In 1950, Man Ray created several set designs for his friend Albert Lewin's film Pandora and the Flying Dutchman. He notably designed cubist-style chess pieces and made several paintings for the film. It was on this occasion that he portrayed Ava Gardner as "Pandora".
