AN AMERICAN SILVER TANKARD
MARK OF KNIGHT LEVRETT, BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, CIRCA 1745
Tapered cylindrical with molded base band and mid-rib, engraved on the front with a later coat-of-arms, the stepped domed cover with baluster finial and scroll thumbpiece, the scroll handle with baluster drop above engraved block monogram T / A*M, with convex George I silver shilling, South Sea Company issue, coin terminal, marked on handle and twice on underside K. Leverett in rectangle (Kane mark A), underside also with engraved weight 28 oz - 16 pwt, and scratched 1703-1753, which corresponds to Levrett's life dates

26 oz. 10 dwt. (824 gr.)

Probably with Samuel Solley (c. 1710-1785).
Acquired by the present owner in August 1963.

Specialist note

The arms are those of Solley, probably for Samuel Solley (c. 1710-1785), councilor of Portsmouth, New Hampshire from 1740 to 1753, who married Elizabeth Jaffrey (1719-1753) on 20 October 1741.
