This lacquered panel is a smaller version of a larger panel created by the artist for the vestibule of the palais permanent des colonies at the International Colonial Exhibition in Paris in 1931, now part of the permanent collections of the musée du quai Branly-Jacques Chirac (inv. 75.3889.7).
Jean Dunand re-utilized this theme when decorating the dining room of the oceanliner L'Atlantique in 1931, and produced a small two panel screen with the maquettes for this decoration. The maquettes were executed in brown lacquer on a silver background, colours he also used on the present panel.
