Specialist note
Keith Haring’s dog is one of his most iconic motifs, he used throughout his career. Haring was interested in the visual interpretation of meaning through signs, and developed his own multivalent system of symbols akin to hieroglyphics.
The dog can take on a wide array of meaning, sometimes referencing Anubis, the Ancient Egyptian god with a jackals’ head who watches over the dead, yet could also allude to the artistic freedom and celebration of hip hop and breakdancing.
