Specialist note
The quality and shape of this pair of glass candelabra is consistent with examples produced by John Blades of Ludgate Hill, 'Cut Glass Manufacturer' to George III from 1789. Established in 1770, Blades created an extensive range of candelabra and chandeliers combining finely cut-glass drops and classically inspired gilt-bronzes. An article in Rudolph Ackermann's The Repository of Arts described Blades' candelabra and chandeliers as being of unprecedented grandeur, 'the sumptuous effects of which have given an impulse to the glass manufacturers of this country for bold and massive articles, hitherto unknown to its artificers and the public.'
