Die Eier der Europäischen Vögel nach der Natur gemalt. Iserloun: J. Baedeker, 1855.
‘Beautifully executed plates’ (Anker). A fine copy of German pharmacist and ornithologist Bäedeker’s treatise on bird eggs. The work is divided into four parts: Accipitres, Oscines, Grallae and Natatores. Finely illustrated and exceptionally precise, this copy includes the decorative frontispiece but not the supplementary illustrations. Anker 21; Nissen IVB, 54; Zimmer I, p.29.

4 parts in 2 volumes, folio (400 x 316mm). Vol. 1 with chromolithographic frontispiece by Sunderland, half-title, title-page and list of plates, vol. II 2 with title-page; overall 80 chromolithographic plates, all mounted on stubs (plates numbered with roman numerals in pencil by later hand, scattered spotting throughout, most heavily affecting plates 71 and 80, marginal tears to plate 24, repaired on verso with tape, pp. 55-6 extended, pp. 48-9 of vol. 2 with damage to corner). Contemporary brown half roan, pebble-grained burgundy cloth boards, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, patterned green endpapers (extremities rubbed, most heavily affecting spine). Provenance: J. G. van Marle (bookplate).
