A SET OF THREE GEORGE II SILVER CASTERS
MARK OF CHARLES KANDLER, LONDON, 1731
Vase-shaped and each on circular foot, engraved with a narrow band of trelliswork and rosettes, the body with moulded rib round the centre and applied with four vertical scrolling straps cast and chased with scrollwork and female masks above fruit and foliage garlands, the domed covers pierced and engraved with alternating panels of scrolls and trellis and with baluster finials, engraved with a crest with baron's coronet above, marked on bases and covers
One 8 1/2 in. (21.6 cm.) high, the pair 7 in. (17.8 cm.) high
54 oz. 7 dwt. (1,691 gr.)
The crest is that of the Clifford of Chudleigh, almost certainly for Hugh Clifford, 3rd Baron Clifford of Chudleigh (1700-1732) of Ugbrooke Park, co. Devon.

CHARLES KANDLER
Charles Kandler was a German-trained goldsmith who worked for many members of the Catholic and Tory community. Amongst his Roman Catholic patrons was the pre-eminent Roman Catholic of the realm, the Duke of Norfolk, for whom he produced the chapel plate for his private chapel at Arundel Castle. He also worked for William Meynell, 3rd Duke of Cleveland and Hugh, 3rd Lord Clifford of Chudleigh.
