Specialist note

These two paintings would once have formed part of a set of twelve, each depicting a different month of the year. The prime versions of the compositions are now in the Museo del Prado, Madrid, but previously formed part of the Spanish Royal Collection; they are listed as early as 1701 hanging in the Palacio del Buen Retiro. The primes are on a much larger scale, measuring more than two metres in width.
