Specialist note

Gertie Millar (1879-1952) was one of the greatest stars of her day. She was known for her performances in Edwardian musical comedies, many of them written by her husband, the composer Lionel Monckton. They had titles such as The Dancing Mistress (1912), The Marriage Market (1913) and A Country Girl (1914). After Monkton’s death in 1924, she married the second Earl of Dudley.
