Specialist note
Lewis Woolf is recorded as working at 35 South Castle Street, Liverpool, from 1834-1851 (B. Loomes, Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World, p.259.) Woolf worked primarily as horologer, and therefore was proficient in metallurgy. The fascinating details of the history of the present lot are detailed in The Shrewsbury Chronicle, 1852. An article published on 21 May, 1852, contains the full report on the Presentation of the Testimonial to A. W. Corbet, Esq., pp. 4-5, and is available to read online.
