CHARLES GOELLER (1901-1955)

The son of a structural engineer, Charles Goeller studied architecture at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Cornell University before pursuing art studies abroad in France. This technical background informs the Precisionist paintings for which he is best known. In the 1930s, Goeller moved to New York City and worked for the WPA and Federal Art Project. In the 40s, he returned to his native New Jersey, where he exhibited with the Modern Artists of New Jersey and Associated Arts of New Jersey and taught at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts. His work is represented in the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C. and Museum of Modern Art, New York.
