Specialist note

A hand-written letter by the artist describing the present work accompanies this lot.

Painted in Cornish, New Hampshire, the artist writes, "'North Pasture - Winter:' is a high field with rocks north of this place, and north of that is a vast wilderness where no one ever goes. While this little painting hung in the studio only a certain kind of person invariably went up to it and lingered over it. Possibly it is only the few who take a great, quiet delight in a sweep of snow, dark against an evening sky. There is some magic about it. Heaven forbid that I should think for a moment I had got it in a painting, but there is a deep satisfaction in feeling that maybe I have suggested it to others: to another, who liked it well enough to own it." (unpublished letter, March 15, 1936)
