Specialist note

The inverted Venus symbol at the lower left of this work is an indication that Lyonel Feininger wanted to keep this work for his personal collection. The watercolour depicts Marienkirche (Saint Mary's Church) in Treptow (current day Trzebiatów) near the Baltic Sea. The artist often visited Treptow during his summer holidays in Deep (current day Mrzeżyno) from 1924 to 1935. This church in Treptow is depicted in the paintings Vita Nova, 1947 (Moeller 488) and Church of Old Treptow, 1949 (Moeller 510).
