engraving, circa 1614, on laid paper, watermark Basel Crozier, a fine impression of this large print, first state (of two), printing with strongly, with much depth and relief, trimmed to the borderline or fractionally to the subject in places, tipped to a card support along the left and upper sheet edges verso, otherwise in good condition

Specialist note

This large engraving by Jacob Matham, pupil and stepson of Hendrick Goltzius, is possibly after a lost pen drawing by the latter. The model for the face of the Saint may have been Maximilian Laignier, to whom this print is dedicated, or Jan Govertsz. van der Aar, merchant and collector from Haarlem, and friend of Goltzius's.
